      A shower commode can be used when walking to the bathroom or toilet is not a safe option. Commodes can be self propelled, or attendant propelled depending on your individual needs, and on the doorway widths of your home.

  • 2) Toilet Equipment

      There are a variety of Toilet Aids to assist you in getting up from a low seat height. Transfers from the toilet can be difficult following some types of surgery, or simply because the height of the toilet feels lower than it used to be!

      Over Toilet Frame

      The OVER TOILET FRAME has height adjustable legs so it can be set at a height to best suit your individual needs. Following a Total Hip Replacement or Total Knee Replacement, this equipment item can be of great benefit in raising the height of your toilet seat to allow you to transfer on and off more easily and safely


      Toilet Seat Raisers

      Toilet Seat Raisers

      The Toilet Seat Raisers can be of use when your toilet space is too small to accommodate an Over Toilet Frame. Although they are not height adjustable, they will increase the height of your toilet by 50mm or 100mm and are very secure when fitted properly.

      The High Back Chair is a useful equipment item when your lounge chair height is too low, or too soft. The High Back Chair has adjustable legs and so can be set at a height to suit your individual needs.


      Recliner Lift Chairs

      Recliner Lift Chairs

      Recliner Lift Chairs are designed to offer you comfort when sitting, and ease of transferring out of the chair. There are many different models and price ranges to choose from which can be confusing at times. Below are some pointers to help you make the right choice for your needs and environment.

      There are two main lift mechanisms you can choose from

      1. 2-way lifting mechanism: this means your legs elevate at the same time as the back rest reclines (legs don’t elevate fully with the back rest in an upright position)
      2. 3-way lifting mechanism: this model allows you to elevate your legs fully whilst sitting upright, as well as being able to recline and have your legs elevated as for the 2-way model.

      If your home has limited space, you may wish to enquire about the Wall Saver Action. Some models have this as an added feature which means that you don’t need a lot of space behind the chair to be able to recline the back rest.

      Should you need a height adjustable chair, but want something a little smaller, ask us about the DINING CHAIR. It has height adjustable legs much the same as a High Back Chair, but has a lower back rest and is a little lighter in weight.


      Kitchen Stool

      Kitchen Stool

      The Kitchen Stool (or Perching Stool) is designed to be set high so that you can perch on it when sitting at the kitchen bench to prepare food. The Kitchen Stool comes with or without arms.


      Tray Mobile

      Tray Mobile

      The Tray Mobile is ideal for those needing extra support when walking indoors. Typically a Tray Mobile is used by people who require a walking aid (such as a walking frame or crutches) and who also need to be able to carry items around the house.

      If you do use a walking aid, and will be spending any period of time alone, or wish to retain your independence, then a Tray Mobile may be a useful aid to enable you to safely transport your phone, plate, book, cup etc from one room to another whilst providing you with the support required for mobility.

      Tray Mobiles come with either 2 or 4 wheels

      Please note that the Tray Mobile is only recommended for indoor use, and should not be used without consultation with your Occupational Therapist

  • 4) Car Transfers

      Handybar & Wedge Cushion

      Car transfers can be difficult following a Total Hip Replacement, Total Knee Replacement or for anyone who has difficulty getting up from a low seat height.

      Use of a wedge cushion and /or handybar can greatly assist you in performing this task more easily.

      There are techniques which can be demonstrated during an Occupational Therapy assessment which will assist you in getting in and out of your car more easily and safely.

  • 5) Scooter

      Scooter

      A SCOOTER can be of use if you’re unable to walk long distances and do not drive. There are many types and sizes to choose from which can sometimes be a daunting process. There is also a huge difference in price and the biggest is not always the best!! If you’re not sure of which scooter is most suitable for your needs, contact one of our Occupational Therapy team and discuss having an assessment to provide you with the clarification you need. We can even arrange a trial for you.

      Adjustable Backrest

      Adjustable Backrest

      The Adjustable back rest can be useful if you need to be elevated at night due to breathing difficulties, comfort, or to make getting up into a sitting position easier. Unlike a bed wedge, the adjustable backrest can be positioned at several different angles of elevation.


      Bed Rail

      A bed ladder is used to assist you to move from a lying position to a sitting position independently. Unlike a bed wedge, the adjustable backrest can be positioned at several different angles of elevation.


      Bed Raiser Blocks

      This equipment item is designed to assist you in getting out of bed (rather than be used a rail to keep you in bed). When positioned at the head of the bed, the bed rail can be used to make rolling over in bed easier and can also be used to steady yourself when first standing up out of bed. The bed rail works well on ensemble style beds.


      Bedside Commode

      Bed or Chair Raiser Blocks come in 50mm and 100mm sizes. They are an easy and cost effective solution to raising the height of a bed that is otherwise suitable and comfortable.

      If you need to raise the height of a bed, be sure you check how many castors (or legs) the bed has.

      Night time toileting can be an issue for a number of reasons. If your toilet is not situated close to your bedroom, you need to toilet often at night, or your just need to get there quickly, having a bed side commode can provide a huge amount of peace of mind.

      There are different models and colours to choose from to help the equipment blend in to your existing bedroom decor as much as possible.


      Electric Bed

      The bed wedge is a large cushion designed to fit on top of your existing mattress, under base sheet. You would consider this piece of equipment if you need to be elevated at night due to breathing difficulties, heart conditions or similar issues where being more upright provides some relief.


      Bed Ladder

      Electric beds offer you the option of having a height adjustable bed. Depending on your need and budget, you can also have an elevating bed head, elevating foot of the bed, or both. A special mattress is also usually required with a sectional electric bed.


      OverBed Frame / Gooseneck

      Over Bed Frame / Gooseneck

      The gooseneck/monkey bar/over bed frame can be a useful aid to assist you with bed mobility. The Gooseneck is not a fixed piece of equipment, and does dismantle into 3 pieces to make transportation easier.

      Please note: the Gooseneck is not suitable for everyone due to the pressure it can place on your shoulders, so consultation with a health professional is recommended prior to use.


      OverBed Table

      Over Bed Table

      An over bed table can be used under most bed types and is very useful for anyone needing to spend greater periods of time in bed. It can also be used over most arm chairs so often finds it’s way into your lounge room. Some models of the table have a tilt top (good for writing and reading), while others have a fixed top (better for eating meals from), although either option can be used for most activities.

      Adapted Vegetable Board

      Anyone having to manage food preparation single handed knows the difficulties associated with chopping up foods. The adapted vegetable board is designed to hold the vegetable/fruit steady on the spikes so you can cut them as required. The opposite corner can be used to position bread so that you can spread whatever you like on it, and cut the sandwich without the bread moving around.

      Bed or Chair Raiser Blocks come in 50mm and 100mm sizes. They are a easy and cost effective solution to raising the height of a bed or chair that is otherwise suitable and comfortable.

      If you need to raise the height of a bed or lounge setting, be sure you check how many castors (or legs) the furniture item has.


      Button and Zipper Hook

      Button and Zipper Hook

      This small item can have a huge impact for anyone experiencing difficulty manipulating small items such as buttons and zips. It can be used one handed, and makes the task of dressing much easier.


      Dressing Stick

      Dressing Stick

      As the name suggests, this item can be used to assist with lower limb dressing, or any other task that involves reaching. The hook on one end can be used to loop around trousers to assist with getting them over the feet. The other end can be used as a shoe horn to negate the need to bend down to reach the feet.


      Elastic Shoe Laces, No Laces Toggles and Long Shoe Horn

      Elastic Shoe Laces, No Laces Toggles and Long Shoe Horn

      Elastic Shoe Laces and No Laces Toggles can be used together or separately as an alternative to normal shoe laces. They can be used by anyone having difficulty managing shoe laces due to problems with dexterity, having to manage with one hand, or simply having difficulty reaching the feet. Elastic shoe laces, used in conjunction with a long shoe horn (or deluxe dressing stick), make a very good combination.


      Handybar

      The handybar is a portable and easy to use devise which can greatly assist anyone who has difficulty getting in or out of a vehicle.


      Jar Opener

      Jar Opener

      There are different types of jar openers available – the Dycem Jar Opener (pictured) is a commonly used item. The Dycem Jar Opener can be used on any sized jar and provides a cushioned grip to assist you with loosening those stubborn jar lids.


      Kettle/Jug Tipper

      Kettle/Jug Tipper

      The Kettle Tipper is suitable for electric kettles (not cordless).


      Long Handled Sponge

      Long Handled Sponge

      The long handled sponge can be useful in helping you to reach lower limbs and back when showering.

      Useful Tip: Heat the plastic handle with a hair dryer until soft enough to bend. Then gently bend the handle to a 30-45 degree angle to make it easier to use when wanting to reach your back.


      Sock Aid

      Sock Aid

      As the name suggests, the Sock Aid is used for assisting you to get socks or stockings on when you find it difficult to reach your feet. This equipment item is particularly useful following a Total Hip Replacement when post surgical precautions restrict you from bending at your hips. With a bit of practice, the Sock Aid is easy to use and can be a very useful aid.

      Tips for Using the Sock Aid

      1. Use socks with a looser band at the top
      2. When using the Sock Aid, ensure the towelling side is on the inside (shiny side against the sock)
      3. Ensure the long straps do not get caught up as you use these to pull the Sock Aid out
      4. When putting your sock or stocking on the Sock Aid, ensure the top of the sock is pulled up just to the top of the Sock Aid and not rolled up on itself

      Using this aid can take some practice, but those who "master the art" use it always!

      Obviously we would prefer you don’t need to step up on any stool and would recommend you rearrange items where possible so that all commonly used items are within easy reach.

      However, should you still require a single step up, this product offers you that with a handle attached to make it safer.


      Tap Turner

      Tap Turner

      The Tapmate Tap Turner can be used on any style of tap to make the turning on/off significantly easier. No fitting is required, you simply place the tap turner over your existing taps and turn them on!
