  • » Occupational Therapy Services

Maximum Independence’s Occupational Therapy services include:

      Home Based Rehabilitation:

Occupational Therapy treatment can be provided in the home in order to teach techniques that will improve your safety and decrease the effort involved in completing self care activities. This may be required following a stroke, spinal injury, brain injury, amputation, shoulder or back surgery, or simply because you are finding self care tasks more difficult than they used to be.

Home based rehabilitation may require an ongoing series of sessions for more complicated issues, or it may be a one off assessment with all recommendations listed in an easy to read report.

Home Based Environmental Assessment and Falls Prevention:

      1. Falls remain the major cause of injury and accidental death in the over 65 age group
      2. 35-40% of all community-dwelling people over the age of 65 years fall at least once per annum
      3. After the age of 80, the incidence of falls increases to 50%
      4. Two thirds of these falls occur in and around the home
      5. Falls in the elderly account for 40% of hospital admissions

Our aim is to minimize any risk of falls or injury so you can remain safe and independent at home.

A home assessment may be required in order to identify any environmental hazards that may impede your recovery following surgery.

Unsure of whether a home assessment is required??

      Try taking our quick test:

You have fallen, or nearly fallen, in the last 12 months
You have two or more steps in, or around your home
You have a shower over bath or a big step into your shower
You are sometimes unsteady in the shower
You have a low/soft lounge chair, or have difficulty getting up off the toilet seat
You are unsteady when getting out of bed
You have difficulty with mobility (shuffling gait, use of walking frame or walking
      stick etc)
You have difficulty with judging depths/distances or seeing contrasts

If you have ticked two or more of the boxes above, it is recommended that you consider a Maximum Independence Occupational Therapist complete an assessment of you and your home environment.

Your Occupational Therapist will assess your mobility and self care, identify any hazards in and around your home, and recommend changes, equipment or rails to IMPROVE your SAFETY and PREVENT FALLS

      Ward/Hospital Based Rehabilitation:

Occupational Therapy services for hospital inpatients focus on assisting you to maximize your independence in self care tasks post surgery or illness. This may be through demonstration of alternative techniques for showering or dressing, transferring from chair/bed/car or through the provision of assistive equipment. If you are having any difficulty with any other area of your daily self care tasks, our Occupational Therapy staff are willing and able to assist.

      Ergonomics:

Did you know that many niggling aches can be reduced and possibly eradicated by making a few small adjustments to the way you work?

Ergonomics is the process of adapting an environment to suit the needs of the user. The aim is to find a match between the work, worker and work environment. This can be as simple as moving items on a desk; taking breaks; or adapting temperature controls. If required, an Occupational Therapist can recommend alternative equipment and/or work station changes to further reduce work related strain.

      Other commonly missed areas include:

      1. Work stress
      2. Work organisation
      3. Lighting and Glare
      4. Temperature
      5. Noise
      6. Desk layout, and of course…
      7. Chair set up

If you are experiencing headaches, fatigue in back or shoulders or simply feel your work station could be improved, contact Maximum Independence for further information.
